top 7 seven cold remedies

Chicken soup

The official journal of the American College of Chest Physicians, Chest magazine, rates chicken soup as the undisputed king of cold cures. The heat of the soup will soothe your throat and clear the airwaves to your nose, while the combination of fats, spices and water will help break down your body’s build up of mucus.

Garlic

Eating raw garlic not only protects you from the amorous advances of vampires (and everyone else for that matter), it also acts as a natural antibiotic. Make sure you only use this remedy if your diet is high in fiber, otherwise you could find yourself spending winter dealing with a nasty case of diarrhea. And a cold.

Onions

A popular cure for the common cold in India is to fashion a necklace out of slices of fresh onions and wear it around your neck for a day. The vapors emitted by the onions should give you a runny nose, make you sneeze and bring tears to your eyes, flushing the cold right out of your body. You’ll also look great.

Horseradish sauce

Horseradish is rich in vitamin C, mustard oil and sinigrin, which combine to make it a powerful antioxidant. Shred and pound a horseradish root and then mix it with lemon juice. You’ll know its working if you experience sweating, tears and a stinging sensation in your head shortly after you drink the resultant sauce.

Banya

Give your cold a double whammy by combining a trip to the banya and a pot of lemon, ginger and honey with boiling water. The sweating caused by the heat of the banya will rid your body of toxicants, the vitamins in the lemon, ginger and honey aid your body’s immune system, and the water will keep you hydrated.

Eucalyptus bath

Place eucalyptus oil or leaves in a large bowl of boiling water and then drape a towel over your head to form a roof and place your face directly over the steamy vapors. The steam emitted should liquefy and eventually loosen the mucus in your nose and throat, clearing the airwaves and relieving congestion. • WB
